Insect Bites and Repellents
When paired with other preventative measures, using the right type of insect repellent, and following recommended quantities, can discourage mosquitoes, and other biting insects, from landing on you. Mosquito repellent is most effective when used in the outdoors and when at dawn, dusk, and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. The most effective repellents contain the active ingredients DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil. Permethrin also is an effective insecticide, but should be applied to clothing only, not directly to the skin.
If possible, stay indoors during peak mosquito hours. If you do go outdoors, wear loose-fitting protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks and hats, especially when going into the woods or wetlands. If heat makes extra clothing uncomfortable, considering using repellent. Mosquito netting can also be placed over infant carriers when outside.
Follow all directions when using repellents, especially when applying on children. Don’t allow children to apply repellents themselves.
