CCMCD invested in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology for improved virus detection. Using a mosquito testing kit specific to vectors and diseases in the western portion of the United States, CCMCD is now able to detect West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis virus, and Western equine encephalitis virus through extracted ribonucleic acid (RNA) in mosquito samples. This robust testing can be conducted in-house with results produced in only 60-90 minutes.
